Das (fiktionale) Städtchen Bomont in Utah verkörpert so ziemlich alle Werte, die dem US-Bundesstaat nachgesagt werden: Beschaulich, ländlich, hochreligiös. Der Großstädter Ren (Kevin Bacon) ist nicht begeistert, zuziehen zu müssen, zumal der Ortspfarrer Moore (John Lithgow) zusammen mit dem Stadtrat dem Ort das Tanzen untersagt hat. Und dieses gehört nun mal zu Rens Leidenschaften – genau wie bald darauf Reverend Moores Tochter Ariel (Lori Singer)… Wenngleich Footloose vor allem als Dance-Klassiker gilt, zementiert der Generationenkonflikt und die Kritik an religiösen Dogmen den Film ebenso als Liebeserklärung an den jugendlichen Freiheitsdrang.

The (fictional) little town of Bomont, Utah seems to represent every cliché haunting the state: cozy, rural, highly religious. Big City boy Ren (Kevin Bacon) isn't thrilled to move here, especially since Reverend Moore (John Lithgow), in cahoots with the city council, has banned all dancing around town. And dancing is one of Ren's great passions – with Rev. Moore's daughter Ariel (Lori Singer) soon becoming another… Primarily considered a classic dance flick, Footloose's critique towards religious dogma and its central conflict between sparring generations also cement the film as a love letter to a youthful fight for freedom.
