Films for Life

The Mental Health Filmfest by Kino im Kasten

We have three goals regarding the "Filme fürs Leben"-Festival: Create awareness surrounding depression and suicidality on campus, guide your attention to the wonderful work done by the Deutsche Depressionsliga (https://depressionsliga.de/) and, of course, simply screening a couple of great movies! Our biggest thanks has to go towards TU Dresden's StuRa. Due to their support, you can watch and visit every event within the festival completely free of charge!

Belle (german with engl. subtitles)

Suzu is your everyday wallflower: At school, she barely manages to speak up, her childhood crush Shinobu seems far out of reach. Due to childhood trauma, she has also lost her beautiful singing voice. Fortunately, the popular social media platform “U” has finally made it to her small rural town! Here, she turns into the confident Belle, who quickly develops a sizeable fandom. However, when another avatar called “The Beast” appears, Suzu finally has to step up.

Director Mamoru Hosoda (Summer Wars, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) delivers a modern incarnation of the Beauty and the Beast-fairytale that connects itself to a Japanese society struggling with mental health and loneliness.

The Royal Tenenbaums (OV with german subtitles)

When fallen-from-grace-lawyer Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) learns that his ex-wife (Anjelica Houston) wants to get married again, he comes up with a drastic plan: In order to get closer to her and his estranged children, he fakes terminal cancer. His offspring, meanwhile, has to contend with their own problems. Chas (Ben Stiller), a finance wiz, has just lost his wife. Margo (Gwyneth Paltrow), a renowned playwright, is in a creative and general slump. And tennis star Richie (Luke Wilson) has abandoned the sport, deeply suicidal. Will the normally selfish Royal manage to bring the family back together?

After his indie-hit Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums became the first mainstream success for director Wes Anderson. An expansive cast wows in this crudely charming portrait of family dysfunction. Tremendously moving in its lowest points and utterly hilarious in its highest.

Good Will Hunting (OV with german subtitles)

Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is a real Bostonian: He loves to have a beer with the boys and has a bit of a temper. Every once in a while, this results in legal trouble. But when he solves a complex math equation during a cleaning job at MIT, he catches the attention of Professor Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgård), who recognizes: Will is a genius. To spare him a jail sentence, Lambeau recruits an old friend, therapist Dr. Sean Maguire (Robin Williams), to set Will straight.

The surprisingly introspective script by Damon and co-star Ben Affleck became their big break, while Robin Williams’ incomparable performance rightfully netted him an Oscar. An engaging, heartwarming homerun, even almost thirty years on.

Harold & Maude (OV with german subtitles)

Young Harold (Bud Cort) relentlessly tries to kill himself. Or he pretends to. Be that as it may, he seriously tests his mother’s (Vivian Pickles) patience, since she tries desperately to set him up with a girl. The plot thickens when Harold falls in love for real – with Maude (Ruth Gordon), who is 60 years his senior and breathes some fresh air and sunshine into his lethargic life. Together, they commence to steal cars, learn the banjo and talk about happiness.

This black cult-dramedy from director Hal Ashby remains, without question, the quirkiest, most life-affirming love story in cinema. Among the inimitable Ruth Gordon, Cat Stevens’ iconic soundtrack is a clear standout.

Mystery Movie (OV with german subtitles)

We've got a Surprise Feature lined up for you as well! Alas, we have to remain tight-lipped about the details, but just this much: Gwyneth Paltrow gets some serious fur-coat-competition, ice cream is acquired and women make up over 90% of the speaking parts in this movie. So the qualities of this Swinging-60s-drama speak for themselves, with or without the title.

The Breakfast Club (german, 35mm)

The rebel, the princess, the jock, the nerd, the basket case: five teenagers who seem to live and breathe these clichés have to attend detention on a fateful Saturday at Shermer High School. Under the strict, but ultimately incompetent watch of vice principal Vernon (Paul Gleason), these seemingly different characters start to grow closer. Breakfast is eaten, mischief is made, hearts are eventually opened up. And there is always time for one or two cool montages!

While the movie turned Judd Hirsch, Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall and Ally Sheedy into the biggest stars of their era, it also signalled the start of the golden age of the teen flick. Rarely before (or after) did cinema take young people, their problems, fears and desires this serious.

The movie will be screened in good old 35mm!
